On Aug. 17, 1988, President Ronald Reagan approved Public Law 100-402, designating Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 of each year to be Hispanic Heritage Month. In recognition of the contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to the Marine Corps and the United States, the Marine Corps Recruiting Command has launched a multimedia campaign celebrating the heritage of more than 20,000 active duty Marines.
This year’s campaign, “Values 2.0”, is a continuation of last year’s “Family Values” campaign, according to Eric Lindsay, diversity advertising officer, MCRC.
“This year we are continuing the family value story,” said Lindsay. “The values of many Hispanic families are in line with our core Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. We want to ensure that the Marine Corps is representative of the different ethnic groups across the country,”
Each year, as MCRC moves closer towards building a Corps representative of the “face of the nation,” more and more Hispanic-Americans are answering their country’s call to serve. According to a manpower data collection conducted in early June, 12% of the Corps’ total force were Hispanic.
“Many Hispanic-Americans are joining the Corps due to their values and high propensity to serve,” said Lt. Col. Chester McMillon, head of officer programs, MCRC.
“Values 2.0” was created by the UniWorld Group, the firm MCRC uses to create campaigns geared towards diverse groups in the U.S. The campaign is made of vignettes, currently featured on Marines.com, that contain testimonials from Hispanic Marines about how the values they grew up with continue to guide them through their service to the Corps.
“Coming from a Mexican-American family, being committed to one another is sort of natural, it is a part of our culture,” said Maj. Joe A. Verduzco Jr. , a logistics officer featured in the campaign’s “Commitment” video currently on Marines.com. Verduzco Jr. is one of several Marines who tell the story of how the values instilled in them early on by their family continue to be the standard they live by in the Corps.
“We reached out across the Marine Corps to find Hispanic Marines to participate in this campaign,” said Lindsay.
According to Lindsay, Marines who participated in the campaign came from duty stations such as Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Calif., Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. , Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif. and MCAS Yuma, Az.
Over the course of Hispanic Heritage Month, more Marines will be sharing their stories. There will be additional video releases each week throughout the month.
